WSW Background: The Feminist Movement of the 1970s inspired a generation of women artists to take control of their artistic careers and create opportunities for themselves and others. It was within this spirit that, in 1974, four visionary women founded Women’s Studio Workshop (WSW) to address gross inequity in the representation of women artists in the visual arts canon.
WSW envisions a society in which women's visual art is integral to the cultural mainstream and permanently recorded in history. To that end, WSW operates and maintains an artists' workspace that encourages the voice and vision of individual artists, provides professional opportunities for visual artists at all stages of their careers, and promotes programs designed to stimulate public involvement and support for the visual arts.
We support women, trans, intersex, nonbinary and genderfluid artists from a wide cross-section of economic, cultural, and geographic backgrounds.
About the Position: WSW seeks a full-time Program Manager. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and adept at communicating both internally with staff and externally with WSW’s constituents. This individual will be fully involved in the programmatic aspects of WSW, and will also need to intersect with marketing, development, and operations staff. The schedule is primarily Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm, but events and classes will sometimes require weekend and evening work.
The Program Manager will work closely with the Artistic Director to maintain, elevate, and manage day-to-day responsibilities of WSW’s three core programming areas: the Artist-in-Residence program, Hands-on Art, and the Summer Art Institute. This person will also provide support to our ceramics program through class programming and the annual Chili Bowl Fest Fundraiser
The Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program is central to WSW’s mission, providing space and support through which artists can create new work. Established in 1979, the AIR program has served over 900 artists from 45 states and 30 nations. AIRs benefit from time, well-equipped studios, technical assistance, remuneration, and an intentionally-cultivated creative experience.
Hands-on Art (HOA) brings local students to WSW’s professional printmaking, papermaking, and book arts studios to work as artists with artists. We devote 12 weeks each year (one spring session, one fall) to providing in-depth, day-long experiences for students in 4th, 8th, and 12th grades. WSW and the Kingston City School District have collaborated on Hands-on Art since 1985, with over 6,500 students participating in the program.
The Summer Art Institute (SAI) takes place annually in July and August, and is composed of approximately 20 week-long workshops in printmaking, papermaking, and book arts. Participants come from around the country (and occasionally the globe!), and include a wide-range of practicing artists at all levels of expertise and experience. We aim to bring teaching artists who are leaders in their field and who are pushing the boundaries of what it means to make work in their mediums.
The ceramics program is designed to create learning and teaching opportunities for WSW’s regional community. Classes are usually 4-8 weeks long, and run 2-3 at a time between March and December. We take a break January-February as the ceramics studio prepares for WSW’s annual Chili Bowl Fest Fundraiser. These classes range from beginner to advanced in level, and, in the past, have focused on throwing, hand-building, material studies, and special firing techniques. The Chili Bowl is a community-oriented event that sees 800-900 attendees annually. Approximately 1,000 handmade ceramic bowls are available for purchase, and come with a serving of chili donated by local restaurants.
Assist Artistic Director in managing the Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program
- Liaise with AIRs before, during, and after their residencies
- Manage entire contract process with selected AIRs
- Coordinate AIR travel arrangements
- Manage residency calendars
Manage the Hands-on Art program
- Work with the Kingston City School District faculty and staff to coordinate bussing, photo release forms, in-school sessions, and other HOA operations
- Work with Artistic Director, teaching AIRs, and interns to develop lesson plans and coordinate materials, tools, and equipment needed
- Organize fall and spring exhibitions of student work
- Coordinate with other staff members/teams to develop HOA-related PR and development materials
Support Artistic Director in coordinating the Summer Art Institute
- Help to identify potential teaching artists
- Work with Artistic Director to develop and implement SAI schedule
- Communicate with potential and confirmed instructors, including but not limited to contracting and travel arrangements
- Liaise between WSW staff and instructors to ensure that proper materials, tools, and equipment are available and prepared for workshops
- Manage day-to-day details of the program before, during, and after workshops
Support AD and ceramics staff in coordinating ceramics classes
- Collaborate with ceramics studio staff to Identify and communicate with potential teaching artists
- Work with instructors to contract, write course descriptions, and determine needs for materials, tools, and equipment
- Coordinate marketing materials and class release schedules
Support coordination of the Chili Bowl Fest Fundraiser
- Work with ceramics staff on overall Chili Bowl planning and execution
- Supervise chili/cornbread solicitation
- Work with marketing team to develop digital campaign and print materials
- Manage volunteers, from recruiting and scheduling to day-of management

Compensation: WSW offers its full-time employees a benefits package that includes health coverage, retirement benefits, generous paid vacation and sick time, and holidays. WSW owns several properties and can offer long-term housing if needed. Salary is commensurate with experience and range is dependent on whether housing is required.
